Transit Explanation: In British English the term for two objects in line is a transit. In Spanish this is an "enfilación". these indicate a position line, part of a triangle, other navigational diagram, safe passage or lead to danger. The objects aligned are said to be in transit. A transit is always preferred over a compass bearing as it is totally unambiguous. A transit may indicate a danger and is not restricted to describing a safe passage or channel. The line they describe may be known as a leading line if this is so stated in the pilot book or sailing directions or local knowledge. A leading line may be drawn from a compass bearing, GPS or other navigational aid and is not necessarily related to two objects aligned. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 50 mins (2010-11-18 20:06:40 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Very often you know you cannot pass a danger until two objects are in transit, (the lighthouse with the chip-shop, the cinema with deep water buoy, the fish-farm buoy with the lighthouse) these are enfilaciones, transits and do not lead you anywhere but mark limits. Enfilar simply means to align. |
