There was something about the look in her eye—about the sound of her voice—that really bothered me. I answered her with the first thing that came into my mind. “It takes more than an accident of blood to make me feel sorry for someone.”

Se refiere al hecho de que ese "someone" nació de una violación de un inmortal a una joven doncella. El problema es que después siguen usando la palabra "accident":

All of a sudden I realized why XX was able to feel bad for him. In a weird way, she must be seeing herself in him. She’d died and then, due to what I supposed she could call an “accident” she’d resurrected without most of her humanity. Then, due to another “accident,” she’d gotten her humanity back. Looking at it that way, I guess she felt sorry for them because she knew what it was like to be part monster, part human.

accidente genético


Explanation:
Un poco más arriba, el texto dice " in their blood, they're part immortal and part human". Se está refiriendo a la sangre en el sentido hereditario, genético. El ser de quien habla tiene la mitad de su sangre humana y la otra lo que fuere por azar o accidente (en realidad todos existimos y tenemos los genes que nos tocaron también por azar).

Se necesita más que ser familiar por accidente para que me sienta mal por aguien.

Pienso que accidente es un eufemismo, me parece bien su empleo en el contexto, porque esto evita hablar de violación. Yo lo seguiría empleando en la traducción.
