English term or phrase: when your m¯a is màing you to practice
The difference between m¯a (a high, level tone) and mà (falling tone) represents the difference between “mother” and “scold.” Musicians, studies show, are better than nonmusicians at picking out easily when your m¯a
is màing you to practice.

(o ing de màing é em itálico, indicando um gerundismo)

quando sua mãe está lhe repreendendo para você praticar (estudar)

Explanation:
m-a = mother
mà = scolding

Parece que é isto que ele quer dizer.

Honestly i think you would be better off contacting a Taiwanese or Chinese who speaks Portuguese for this one (I assume it is Chinese)

Asker: That would be a great idea, but i didn´t have time to do that. I think that mà could also be severe, which was my choice. It makes more sense, meaning that if the person does not have the right accent might change from mother to severe. Thanks anyway!
