I'm more familiar with its use for voting purposes, when electing union representatives, délégués du personnel (usually but not necessarily the same), and prudhommes. Company staff are divided into groups in accordance with their status in the profession and vote for representatives representing that category.
It would be like having a divided parliament with different groups of MPs representing farmers, steelworkers, office workers, tax office employees, career soldiers, doctors, lawyers, unemployed single mothers, Christians, Taoists, etc., where each socioprofessional group elected its own representative to better defend their particular interests. There is something to be said for it, and in these days of computers there is no reason why such a system could not be implemented, along with multiple votes based on (for example) age, income, tax paid, number of employees, number of children, years military service, number of years in prison, distinctions awarded, etc. (i.e., the more you do, have done, and can continue to do for your country, the more power you have to help the country do more for you), for a truly democratic system.
