Telephone Relay Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing People

Persons with hearing or speech disabilities, or persons needing to contact them can connect to Telephone Relay Services (TRS) by simply dialing the digits 711 from any phone in the United States.

With Relay Services for the Deaf - accessible by dialing 711 or a toll-free number, and everything is GREAT, right? Wrong! In spite of the Americans with Disabilities Act, public service announcements or commercials, and the fact relay numbers are prominently published in phone books, there is not that much awareness of relay services for the deaf among the hearing publi

TTY /TDD

Explanation:

A TTY is one of the most commonly used accommodations by people who are unable to understand speech on the telephone. TTY is an acronym for Tele Typewriter– a device that uses text instead of voice to communicate via telephone lines. Sometimes the acronym TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) is also used for the same device. This term is used less frequently since we prefer to describe the device, rather than those who use it (some people who use a TTY are not deaf).

neutral  Jefferson D Boyles, ELS: Yes and no - two deaf people, both using TTYs, could communicate with each other, which wouldn't be the equivalent of the CISO, which has the objective of allowing deaf people to communicate with hearing people.

agree  Jefferson D Boyles, ELS: Yes, although the deaf person must be using a TTY or TDD (two names for the same thing) in order to take advantage of the TRS.
