French term or phrase: nature des choses
The following is one of the "Notes méthodologiques" near the start of a document entitled "Statistiques Conjoncturelles". I'm struggling to find a nice turn of phrase for this (it's probably too late in a very long day!) and was wondering if anyone could provide some inspiration, which would be most appreciated:

"Il ne saurait être question d'inscrire un nombre en raison de la nature des choses"
