Italian term or phrase: tempera a tuorlo d’uovo verniciata e velata
discussing the work of Mario Donizetti: Il rigore scientifico nella ricerca tecnica gli ha consentito la rimessa in opera della tempera a tuorlo d’uovo verniciata e velata perduta da secoli...

This has been translated in wikipedia as "egg-yolk tempera varnished and glazed". Doesn't sound right though. Thanks for any help.

English translation:egg tempera with varnish and glaze/glair depending on what it is
Explanation:
Glaze - transparent paint used to soften effect
Glair: egg-white glaze

The egg yolk is the medium used to bind the pigment. "Egg tempera" is the standard term used to describe this kind of paint/painting. "Egg yolk tempera" isn't wrong but "egg tempera" is more professional!

Also, "velatura" in painting is the application of a transparent layer of paint on the surface of the painting. "Velata" describes this application. See Devoto-Oli

And of course "verniciatura" is varnishing, which means a layer or layers of transparent varnish applied to the surface of a painting.

Conservation labs often strip varnish and glazes that were added in subsequent centuries to either "protect" or alter the painting surface, but which modern conservation efforts for one reason or another want or need to clean away. From your excerpt it's not clear to me if this is the case with this tempera painting

Now I see -- this is a contemporary artist who has succeeded in figuring out how to make a tempera painting. Tempera painting was phased out in Italian painting with the rise of oil as a medium -- Michelangelo was in fact one of the last Italian artists to use it, and this made him "old fashioned"!

Fun translation project/interesting artist!
