French term or phrase: photographie sonore
A pianist talks about his love and deep connection with improvisation , the sentence reads as follows:
Devant la feuille blanche je me suis aperçu que tout ce que je rêvais de coucher sur le papier, tous ces moments fugitifs qui me traversent et dont je voudrais réaliser une photographie sonore en les écrivant, tous ces instants s'échappent dès que je veux les arracher au fil du temps pour les enfermer dans la cage dorée de la partition musicale.

English translation:musical snapshot, photographic study in music
Explanation:
Depending on the "depth" of the initiative.

moments fugitifs and instants suggest a few notes, but any piece of music is going to be a reasonable length. If it's clear that the "photographic study" is made up of a series of instantaneous "snapshots", then "snapshots" might work, but a single, profound photo - a photographic study - will take a lot of thought and preparation, and even if it takes a hundred shots to get the desired result, they are not "snapshots".

Explanation:
It's more or less what is meant, as the French word can mean a portrait made by a photographer.

agree  Alison Sabedoria (X): "Snapshot" conveys the impression of trying to capture something fleeting, but, as you say, it depends... .

agree  David Vaughn: Snappy! I rather like snapshot here - and obviously anything that could be said about "snapshot" just being about an instant in time (& therefore not referring to music) also applies to my answer "photograph" - as well as the author's UNE photographie.
