Farmaceutische bedrijven informeren het publiek op verschillende manieren over ziekten, aandoeningen en geneesmiddelen. Ze brengen in voorlichtingscampagnes symptomen onder de aandacht van het publiek, ofwel: maken symptoomreclame.

Ik heb een deel van de tekst al in het Engels, maar daar wordt symptoomreclame vertaald als "Campaigns to raise symptom awareness." Dat moet toch beter kunnen lijkt me. Suggesties?

Symptoomreclame' is reclame waarbij aandacht wordt gevraagd voor een bepaald medisch probleem en waarbij gelijktijdig wordt verwezen naar de huisartsen of naar sites waarop bepaalde farmaceutische pro- ducten min of meer worden aangeprezen. In beginsel is een dergelijke vorm van reclame noch verboden, noch onwenselijk. Dat is pas anders wanneer het gaat om publieksrecla- me voor geneesmiddelen die uitsluitend op recept mogen worden verstrekt. Zulke recla- me is immers verboden op grond van het Besluit geneesmiddelenreclame.

DTC advertising still seems a long way off on this side of the Atlantic, where it is mostly governments, rather than healthcare companies, who foot the drugs bills. But the first tentative steps have already been taken in that some drugs firms have begun ’symptom advertising’.

Symptom advertising is where a company will describe a medical

condition, discuss the fact that appropriate medication may be available

and perhaps show a company logo, but it does not mention the drug’s

name.

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): Here in Canada I see glowing advertisements for prescription drugs but they never mention what it is for, just 'ask your doctor if this drug is for you'. Maybe something to do with legislation....
