'Particpating shares' are not ordinary shares. Nor are they 'stock'.

The translation of quota di partecipazione is participating shares in all my dictionaries.

Here is another translation of quota di partecipazione as particpating shares available online:

So what is a 'particpating share'?

It is a "share that carries the right to a dividend if the company's profits reach a certain level or some other financial target is reached." [web source]

A particpating stock gives some 'ownership' in a company and is usually paid first if there is liquidation.

This is not a question of UK versus US English or similar.

I would have given myself a confidence of 5 ... but I hate doing that so often.

I don't find the addition of 'particpating' at all confusing ... I understand the difference between ordinary shares and 'participating' shares and have enough faith in 'readers' to also know the difference. Not including 'participating' would actually be confusing,

share

Explanation:
.. in return for a share in the profits from the film

to try to translate "partecipazione" with participation or participating, would confuse a reader. In English these are "profit sharing schemes" you can participate in a joint venture in English, buy a share in the profits is the normal English. Of course a "partecipazione" in italian is an investment in the share capital, or more simply "shares".

agree  philgoddard: This is actually a tautology, because a share is a participation. So just share would do.

agree  Mr Murray (X): Yes, I agree with you and my dictionaries. There are other words for 'share' that would be more obvious anyhow. My dictionaries all specify "quota di partecipazione" as 'participating share. Maybe I should have put my confidence at 5.
