French term or phrase: pour être réaliste
Context is a cabaret singer explaining that a surrealist poet arranges her bawdy music-hall songs for her. Her grandmother (who has heard the songs) responds, 'Ça, pour être réaliste!'

I took this to suggest that the songs are pretty down to earth / gritty – realistic, as opposed to surreal – but I don't know how to work it into a conversation.

English translation:there's realism for you!
Explanation:
I tried to go for the irony in the sentence rather than the literal translation. If it's a play on philosophical terms I think it's best to translate with the school of thought (realism) as opposed to the adjective (realistic).

talk about reality!

Explanation:
I would have liked to see the surrounding text. It is either really realistic or not one bit. Hence my confidence level.

agree  Michalsuz: Because your translation is unclear too, as well as short and tidy, it seems to me that this is the best!
