Not to be able to read the "Porteuses" in proof-- I shall be afraid to look at it. I would not have missed reading it for ten times its value if I could have helped it.

El autor, que está en el Caribe, da mucha importancia a la lectura de las pruebas de cualquier composición por parte de su respectivo autor.

Mi intento de traducción (pero no lo veo claro):
"Si no puedo leer las pruebas de las 'Porteuses', tendré miedo a echarles un vistazo. No habría dejado de leerlas ni por diez veces su valor si hubiera podido evitarlo".

Y creo que el caso es que efectivamente no ha podido leer las pruebas/el borrador de Porteuses.
