Italian to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Tourism & Travel / Italian seaside resorts
Italian term or phrase:offerta turistica
This phrase does not refer to a single holiday package but to the whole of tourist facilities and tourism industry (hotels, bathing establishments, restaurants, events, etc.). "Offerta", here, means all that the area can offer as far as tourism is concerned. Can "offerta" be translated by "offer" here? If not, what do you suggest? Thank you.
I used the word "supply" as it is the standard economic term to express what is offered by the market. I changed it around a little bit to "tourism supply" as I've found many hits for "tourism supply" but not as many for “tourist supply” with the appropriate meaning. A" tourist offer" seems to be a holiday package but with globalization this term may well become the English counterpart for "offerta turistica" very soon. 3 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
If there's already an adjective form, why complicate things?
touristic -- similar to the Italian turistica.
This is obvious for comparatives or superlatives:
a more tourist city?....the most tourist city? a more tourism city?...the most tourism city?
a more touristic city...the most touristic city
A quasi 'antonym' adjective also exists -- 'touristy':
"describes a place which is not attractive because a lot of tourists visit it and it is full of things for them to buy and do"
There might be a lot of people ... and I mean a lot...using the nouns 'tourist' and 'tourism' in compound/complex noun form, and that's valid...especially if communication is unhindered; and it would simply be pedantic to suggest they shouldn't be used - but when there's an existing, recognized adjective - I try to use it.
.. what do I know? I'm sitting here in London listening to English spoken every day, and "tourist offer" is anything but odd on the ear. But everyone else seems to know better, so I'm out of here :)
sounds odd to me, regardless of how direct and accurate it may be, it still sounds odd on the ear. Tourism "offering" maybe, but I can't say I'm wild about that either.
Tom, "Offerta turistica" may include all that. It means everything available for tourists to arrange and enjoy their stay in a resort or tourist area and the companies which provide that. If we restrict the term to the area maybe we could say "Visual case study and tourism industry on the coast of Romagna". Does that sound OK to anyone?
the tourism industry isn't the same thing as what's offered to tourists. The tourism industry is travel agents, hoteliers, bus companies, tour organisers, tour guides, the whole system. Which I don't think is intended by the source text.
Miriam, you're right, it is best to use a combination of suggested solutions depending on the sentence context. Moreover, the speech is addressed to an American audience and, as "offer" sounds weird to American ears, I think it is safer to use "tourist/m industry" which is how I have translated it so far.
Google is convincing on "tourism offer". I get the feeling its a GB vs US English difference because it sounds very odd to my US ears, but appears on lots of English sites.
I think here "tourism industry" would also work well, but I think this is a good example of where you could use a combination of suggested solutions depending which one flows the best in a particular sentence. It sounds like this is a tourism industry study so I would tend towards more official terminology. "Seaside tourism industry" for the title? ... I add this, from Oxford dict. : "on offer" - that can be bought, used, etc The following is a list of courses currently on offer. So, as also Tom says, "offer" should not be a crazy choice, after all, as anything paid for or simply used by tourists is an "offer" , either paid for or for free!
