set width Explanation: According to this excellent glossary http://www.k-international.com/typesetting_terminology Set-width The width of a letter and its surrounding space; the space, needed to set a line of text in a specific typeface. Some programmes have tracking to adjust the typeface to make it set looser or tighter. Also known as ‘advance width’. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2010-06-25 13:02:26 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Double-checked: http://www.fonts.com/AboutFonts/Glossary/_glossary_s.htm set width In all kinds of typesetting, the horizontal space a character occupies, including the spaces on either side. Also known as set, width, character width, and (in digital and phototypesetting and in reference to typewriters) escapement. Since the development of machines that mechanically cast metal type, the measurement of this space has usually been given in relative units; however, in computer-aided type design, millimeters are also sometimes used. The measurement of set width is often known as the width value; sometimes the term set width is also used to describe this measurement. |
