Term from the Portuguese penal code, complete sentence reads: A instrução é formada pelo conjunto dos actos de instrução que o juiz entenda dever levar a cabo e, obrigatoriamente, por um debate instrutório, oral e contraditório, no qual podem participar o Ministério Público, o arguido, o defensor, o assistente e o seu advogado, mas não as partes civis.

I have seen a similar Kudoz question where the selected answer was "case management" but that just does not seem right to me so I would love to receive some other input. Thank you in advance!
