Consider rephrasing the original: Kissing Don't Last; Cookery Do! Explanation: Отсюда: George Meredith, роман «The Ordeal of Richard Feverel» Должна быть узнаваема оригинальная фраза, если она в английском имеет столь же широкое распространение, как ее русский эквивалент: Любовь приходит и уходит, а кушать хочется всегда. Peace and harmony is all well and good, but we need food on the table Explanation: Would be more certain, if the secret context were revealed. That is, how to phrase the second part depends on who's saying what in the article. ... but we need food on the table. ... but food on the table comes first. ... but give us meat and potatoes. The singular "is" is deliberate; it kind of makes up for not literally translating "политика". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 days3 hrs (2010-04-29 19:04:35 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Thanks, Angela. The version you wrote out here is begging for some articles: A Policy of Peace and Consent Is Good, but a Full Stomach Is Better Also, I don't think "consent" sounds right, or, rather, I can't quite picture what a "policy of consent" would mean. It makes me want to ask: consent to what? For example, when we say the job of the Senate is "to advise and consent," it implicitly means to consent _to_ what the President will have put before it. But "consent" as a general policy sounds a little bit dangling. Were you thinking of "concord"? -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 days5 hrs (2010-04-29 20:55:20 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- You're right, that sometimes articles may be omitted in headlines, but not here. It sounds like a mistake. To put the other point more strongly, regarding "consent," that also sounds to me like a mistake. I don't know how hard you want to press that point with the author, but I do think it sounds as if the headline-writer wasn't familiar with the meaning or сочетаемость (is that what you call it? - what the word can go with) of the word "consent." Yes, there are contexts in which "consent" can be used by itself, without "to", but "to" is usually implied. Expressions like: "by common consent" (everybody consents to, or agrees to something); or "the age of consent" (especially to marriage or intimate relations, and probably the author would not like "policy of consent" - to all and sundry? - to be mixed up with that). I just now looked in Webster's Unabridged, and was interested to see that meaning 4 is, indeed, "accord, unanimity." BUT! - that is designated "archaic." So, you might want to recommend strongly to the author a switch to "accord", "harmony", or, as you say, "reconciliation." |

I agree with the policy of peace and consent, but my belly needs food Explanation: ... |
