rigged investment [here] Explanation: I used to work in investment banking and I assume the investment being referred to here is the allegedly fraudulent Abacus CDO (collateralized debt obligation) created by Goldman Sachs in conjunction with John Paulson, which I have been following rather closely over the past week or so. Goldman Sachs has now been accused of fraud by the SEC (Securities & Exchange Commission) in relation to Abacus. The SEC is claiming that Goldman deliberately structured this CDO to fail by stuffing it with "toxic" mortgages, and then sold it to unsuspecting investors as a legitimate investment vehicle. Goldman simultaneously "shorted" this CDO (bet against it) by taking out a type of insurance on it known as a CDS (credit default swap). When the CDO failed as planned (losing US $1 billion for the unsuspecting parties who had invested in it), Goldman was then able to collect on the insurance (the CDS). Some commentators have compared this to a situation where a used-car salesman deliberately sells a car with bad brakes to a customer while simultaneously taking out life insurance on the customer, hoping that the car will crash so that the salesman can collect on the insurance. This has been referred in at least one media report to as a "rigged" investment: "...$1 billion on a rigged investment deal pegged to dicey home loans..." http://www.kansascity.com/2010/04/16/1882652/sec-accuses-gol... http://americanidolizing.com/gossip/Goldman-Sachs-Busted-394... http://celebrifi.com/gossip/Goldman-Sachs-in-trouble-with-SE... http://www.az-mortgage-rates.com/Az-Refinance/Subprime-Home-... So I think the nice short English word "rigged" is appropriate here, rather than some other term such as "opaque" or "non-transparent". Most CDOs are indeed rather opaque or non-transparent, due to their inherent complexity, as they consist of many mortgages grouped into various "tranches" having different seniority. What distinguishes the Abacus CDO is that it is the first one which has been accused by regulators of being fraudulent, as there is evidence (in the form of emails) indicating that Goldman knew in advance (and desired) that the CDO would fail and that investors would lose money on it, so that Goldman would be able to collect on the insurance (the CDS). |
