Having skimmed the article below, I am on the verge of turning vegan or only consuming Hindu-produced dairy foods!

I think it's important not to get carried away here with our own hype. The FR text simply says that it is beef from a breed of cattle that is specifically intended for meat rather than dairy production; here, for example, this would be our own Limousin breed, which are very poor milkers, but produce superb meat. Cf. also Charolais, etc. — and of course the famous Aberdeen Angus in the UK!

Gabrielle, what I mean with "destination of use" is if the animal is destinated to produce mikl or meat.
Indeed, I would have suggest "Beef for meat" but I'm not EN native and don't know how this would be understood in UK/US.
Beef cattle breeds seems to me the best proposition for far.

Lionel, I think you mean origin, not "destination of use". "Les races à viande" (in the case of Bovidae) = beef cattle breeds. You don't mean that "le boeuf" could be the animal (a steer as opposed to bulls and cows), do you?

Sorry to disagree with everybody, but the French meaning here is to indicate the destination of use, not the quality.

Nothing to do with top quality or noble meat, just the beef for steack and not that for milk.

Absolutely re: dairy-farming v beef-farming meat. The only problem is that *usually*, English-speakers are less comfortable making the connection between the mooing animal and the steak on their plates than their French counterparts... I suppose it could be useful to know whether this is intra-industry (meat people advertisting withing their own industry) or to public advertising. I assume it's the latter, in which case we're back to the drawing board...

It think it's a natural assumption that they are talking about specially-reared beef, rather than milking cows that are past their sell-by date. And I imagine that the "morceau d'environnement" is simply emphasising that it has been reared naturally - ie, outside in pastures green as far as possible.
In other words, you couldn't get any better, more natural beef

@ Gabrielle: But I think you could be right, and Nora also has a good point re whether this is for the meat industry itself. As she says, the British public is less pragmatic regarding food sources than the French

I think they're trying to make the distinction between beef from beef cattle and beef from dairy cattle that are culled or at the end of their milking careers ("cow meat" to used the EU term). In other words, something along the lines of "breed will tell" and the tie-in with extensive ranching (the "morceaux de l'environnement") rather than stockyard fattening. HTH
