Firstly, thanks everyone!

I just couldn't pick the best variant, as e.g. to tempt and lure are good ones, but I didn't like ""weird" after all. I liked Alex's "outlandish bird" but "coax" is a bit out of our league here.

So, I decided to use my "tame" and for "диковинная" I came up with "a never seen before bird".

It's a pity I can't divide points =(

Yes, Oleksiy, I agree about the dictionaries, but they don't really explain the subtleties and the overtones. I just felt I had to point out the impression that the reader would get from the phrase "weird bird" - and it would not be very flattering to the bird! :o) The phrase "weird and wonderful" is very commonly used, and it somewhat takes the edge off that negativity. However, that's not really what you are after, is it.

Thanks for your opinion. I agree one should be careful with "weird". However, dicitonaries say it's rather OK in our case:

And, BTW, what does the community think about "the fitcher's bird". Any chances for it? Or it will never be understood in this meaning?

No offence, but "weird" has slightly negative overtones, I think. I'd use something like "this marvel of a bird" or "this wondrous bird", where "wondrous" is an archaic word meaning "divnii"... I also think that "tame" is quite a good choice here. To "subdue" could be another option, although nowhere near as good, imho.
