I was wrong: these things (can) have buttons:

Subscribers to the US magazine Entertainment Weekly expect to read about television shows, but in the issue of 18th September, some of them discovered that they could watch the shows themselves. Inside the magazine was a little screen, slightly smaller than a credit card and held within a cardboard insert on the printed page, showing—in full colour and with sound—new and old shows made by the CBS Corporation. BUTTONS ON THE SURROUND CONTROLLED THE CLIPS, one of which was an ad for PepsiCo, which helped pay for the insert.

These things deliver only the video contained in their chips. Presumably in the next step these things will display messages via an Internet feed (?).

module recently inserted into some magazines? I heard about it on the radio: certain (not all) of this particular magazine had inside them a small screen that displays adverts. If so, I rather assume the dalle is the module itself, which I gather is little more than a screen and the gubbins for making it tick. So while it is a "screen", it's not as if the module had any other components for the screen to be distinguished from (as I imagine/understand it).

The author is trying to sell an idea for a widget which display changing ads on a "petit panneau a LED" for display in taxicabs and other such locations. And to Barbara, I saw the other definitions of dalle in two dictionaries. Others may hear those meanings in their mind, but not that's not it in this context. Anyway I hope this gives you more context Chris.

A card/board with embedded software on the "dalle" and a GSM (mobile phone) link? What does this widget do? Essentially a dalle can be a board, panel, slab, even a concrete screed, so here it could be almost anything. As ever, context is all. More info required, please!
