however, he became restive and curious, and one day convinced his chariot driver to take him on an unsanctioned visit outside the palace gates.

Creo que sí tiene sentido pues el autor establece una comparación de lo que sucedía entonces con lo que sucede actualmente. El rey (o mandatario, o jefe de Estado, o líder) cuando su hijo sale fuera del palacio (o casa presidencial, o entorno lindo, bello y sin problemas), le oculta las cosas feas (miserias del pueblo) que podría ver. Así, el hijo solo ve lo hermoso. Eso se hacía antes, y lo mismo sucede hoy: un elemento de distracción importante, como los Juegos Olímpicos (o un Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol), impiden que una persona vea la realidad.
