This is an indirect quote of what the patient actually said, so a colloquial expression is probably in order her.

The patient wondered if its was likely that it could be because her own marrow had started up, since she felt so much better.

Or perhaps ´was active (again)´.

Her own marrow was taking over from transplanted tissue or whatever treatment she had been receiving, and she would feel better, because the process was better regulated.

agree  Brian Young: yes, this is a very common expression over here, applied to all manner of things, health problems, cars, etc. Probably most often with respect to the reoccurrence of a problem.
