From ガタガタする, I think. In Toyota, we often had シフターガタ which meant the Shift Lever had looseness problems. Sometimes it is called "slop", but most often it is "looseness". "Rattling" would be for the sound.

agree  Tina Wooden: This is possible, too, although you'd think they'd use the kanji then. == The context would be key. If it's in a list of defects, I'd be certain that it's talking about looseness, but can't say for sure with just the info provided.
