Spanish term or phrase: vieja
In Mexico, vieja is a slang term for "wife" (and "old lady" is the slang in English). I would appreciate it if someone could confirm that in Argentina, it is used for "mother". In other words, can I use just "my poor mother" rather than "my poor elderly mother" here?

Por eso les dije hace un momento que los abrazaba como abrazaría a mi madre, porque ustedes han tenido por mí los mismos pensamientos y los mismos dolores que mi pobre vieja habrá sufrido en estos días.

Rafael: Thanks for your answer. Actually, the client feels strongly that vieja here is an adjective describing the mother, so we're using "poor elderly mother" but I'll give you the pts. since your take on it was supported by peers. Hope you are enjoying a good weekend!

my poor/dear wife

Explanation:
sorry to disagree with you all but in Argentina "mi vieja" normally refers to the wife and so I will go out and state my case here :)

Notes to answerer
Asker: David: This translation has been fun but also a headache (seems like the two usually go together!). In fact, Perón was talking about his mother (he made no reference to Eva in the speech). And the client wanted me to use "my poor elderly mother". But thanks for offering an answer and sticking to your guns!
