surface car park Explanation: I presume this is one of those cases where you simply have to go for the obvious. See, e.g.: http://www.spelthorne.gov.uk/environment___planning/parking/... As you virtually say yourself, a distinction is frequently made between multi-storey car parks and surface car parks. Just try Googling terms like "surface car park", "surface parking", "surface spaces", etc. and see what you think. |

off-street parking Explanation: Finding out that "ytparkering" is most likely a synonym to "markparkering" is very useful. This link: http://www.vanersborg.se/download/18.321f5ba91268f4ba9bf8000... has an image which clearly shows that "markparkering" (search for "markparkering" to find it) is an outdoor parking lot, not along a street with traffic. The two Swedish terms ytparkering and markparkering are primarily used in a much, more formal context, such as in a legal context or for architectural and planning purposes. That is why off-street parking, which is fundamentally a legal concept, is the better term in this case. |
