In an academic transcript, this appears next to one of the listed course names in brackets:

I can't figure out what the 文 here refers to, any ideas?

English translation:Mathematics (For the Department of Humanities)
Explanation:
As Donglai said, this course is specially arranged for students in the department of humanities.
(文) here means 文科, in China it not only covers department of liberal arts, but also school of law and school of politics and international relationships. When I was a law school student, I took 数学(文) as my core module.
So I think "department of humanities" is more suitable here.

arts/liberal arts

Explanation:
In Chinese Universities, there are three major streams, respectively liberal arts, science and engineering. Here, the charater "文" indicates that the math couse is a part of liberal arts curriculum and easier than the math course for the other two streams.

BA curriculum

Explanation:
http://www.cs.virginia.edu/ba/curriculum.html

数学(文) - Mathematics (BA curriculum)
数学(理) - Mathematics (BS curriculum)

The Mathematics (BA curriculum) is a light version of the Mathematics (BS curriculum). For example, calculus is often taught as a set of rules without dabbling with limits, the Riemann sum, not to mention the Lebesque measure and all that interesting but less "practical" stuff.
