effectivement je traduirais par "intellectuel" et cet adjectif n'est qu'une option (d'autant que freelancer est probablement "journaliste indépendant")

Reservations to this answer seem to stem from the definition of the term "scholar", and whether this explcitly refers to a scholastic, academic background.

Je pense qu'oublier le mot "scholar" trahirait la description de cette personne.
individual est difficile à traduire sans passer par une périphrase mais le sens est qu'il l'est devenu par ses propres moyens, sans faire des études particulières, puisque non mentionnnées.
Donc il est autodidacte.
Cela existe mais c'est suffisamment rare pour que cela soit souligné.
