leg

English translation: specified part of the transport route

06:14 Jan 23, 2010
English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Bus/Financial - General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
English term or phrase: leg
In a leg only the addresses can be used as pickup addresses which are marked as pickup, shipping or production facility.
If they are not marked as one of these address types they can not be linked to a leg.

This is from minutes of an international logistics business meeting which I am translating into German. I cannot fathom what the "leg" relly means/refers to

section of a journey

Explanation:
The original is a little strange, perhaps not written by a native speaker. The first sentence should read: "In a leg only the addresses which are marked as pickup, shipping or production facility can be used as pickup addresses."

In other words alternative facilities which have not been pre-agreed may not be used. The client cannot change the point from which the goods are to be picked up, different methods of transport/routes may not be used etc.

Journeys are divided into different legs for coordination purposes. Items would normally be collected from various pick up points and taken to a central depot in a small city, for example (first leg). The central depot then becomes a pick up point, and from there and from various other city depots the items would be taken to a logistics hub (second leg) etc etc.

In short, what the sentence is saying is that there is no flexibility in procedure, no adlibbing. Otherwise tracking would become a nightmare.

neutral  Jack Dunwell: This is all rather obvious in this context. It is the joy of the search for the succinct and relevant which distinguishes the commitment of translation.
