I have looked up assomar, but I can't figure out what it can mean here. Thanks

I believe this was simply a poor use of the actual meaning of the verb "assomar". In AmE, the only way I can think of rendering this sentence would be "The use of flashback...is a throwback to the film noir genre": it is a reference to the genre, a suggestion of the same aesthetic without the film fitting into the genre entirely.
