In the context of business education, there are 3 types of "ingénerie pédagogique" of which "conception pédagogique (instructional design) is one. So "ingénerie pédagogique" refers to the overall management of a training plan, the whole gamut of resources used to facilitate the learning process, particularly in adaptive learning.

I was on the point of using John's answer as other, similar terms in the text do translate literally "financial engineering" and "food engineering" ... they are both MSc's in the UK. However, this is not the case for "Educational Engineering" Instructional Design appears frequently in course descriptions so I have used this.

Thanks Sheila, I hadn't noticed that Stewart claims to have invented the term.

However, I think her claim may be overstated, as her article was published in 1997, and my first reference, "Educational Engineering for the Schoolroom" by George A. Brown, was published in 1939. The Termium record for educational engineering dates from 1994.

Maybe what Stewart meant was that she was proposing the use of the term in the relatively narrow meaning she defines: a "system which support[s] the model/measure/iterate technique of scientifically improving an object."
