However, if an operating loss arising in the current year must be carried forward, the resulting tax benefit is not a current tax benefit. It is a deferred tax benefit. The tax benefit of the loss should be eliminated from the current tax provision and instead should be recorded as a deferred tax asset (which may be subject to a valuation allowance). In this case, on Line 8 add as a positive number the amount of net operating loss generated in the current period that will carry forward to offset future taxable income. The operating loss carryforward will then be recorded in the Deferred Tax Rollforward Schedule
