Italian term or phrase: cucchiaio raschiatore
I'm proofreading a translation of a paper on orthopedic surgery. The text says:

"La cavita' midollare viene aperta mediante il *cucchiaio raschiatore*."

Our translator rendered this term as "shaving spoon", which doesn't look right to me and which I don't find at all in a google/bing search for this context.

I only find 'cucchiaio raschiatore' 7 times in google, one of them in an article about abortion ... so I'm thinking it's a curette of some type, and I'm thinking of changing the translation to "scraping spoon" (which also doesn't appear too often in a search).

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all your help.

currete scraper
Explanation:
curette system for scrapping the endocervix in performing an endocervical curettage (ECC) procedure. The system includes a disposable curette scraper removably mounted to the end of an eloretengated handle. The curette scraper includes an elongated wall having a curved base end and curved tapered edges extending between the base and a tip portion. The wall and its edges are adapted to fit over the cervix up to the anatomical internal os. Serrations are formed along each tapered edge. The curette scraper is plastic and can be removed from the handle and placed in a fixative along with the tissue and mucus scrapings for pathological analysis.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Carmen ... thanks for your answer. Would you use this term in the context of orthopedic surgery (scraping the inside of the femur) as well?

Note to reference poster
Asker: Ciao Sue :) Thanks. I've been finding references about Charnley as I read up on these terms and procedures. It helped to see the picture of the curette, which explains why they're talking about a 'cucchiaio' in the Italian.
