refers to things of which the author had been afraid Explanation: the author is saying that he now realizes/understands that he is often harmed by things that seem pleasant (sweet, soft, pretty, pleasant things), and often not harmed by those things on the horizon which he perceived/thought/feared were "threatening to devour me." One of the common English language ways expressing a similar sentiment is, "Never Take Counsel Of Your Fears" Reference: http://www99.epinions.com/content_2338365572 Reference: http://www.insightwriter.com/2009/03/17/never-take-counsel-o... |

I realise Explanation: For as I write I realise that the Great Big Black Things [...] HTH -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2009-12-30 16:50:41 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- BECAUSE as I write I REALISE that ALL THOSE FEARS (=the Great Big Black Things that have loomed against the horizon of my life, threatening to devour me) WERE SIMPLY FEARS THAT WERE THERE BUT NEVER HAPPENED (=simply loomed and nothing more.) I hope this is a better explanation. |
