Friction device to prevent trailer becoming separated from towing vehicle Explanation: Could only find this, which doesn't give any detail. Most modern caravans have a friction type tow hitch which has to be tightened onto the tow ball, if left loose the hitch does not grip the ball and a caravan can then start to fishtail, if the ball is a little worn it can easily pull off the ball altogether. http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=19749... |

stabiliser using friction pads (example: AL-KO AKS3004 Stabiliser) Explanation: "To ensure safe travel and coupling, the use of the AL-KO AKS3004 Stabiliser and Tow Ball significantly improves the connection between towing vehicle and trailer. The stabiliser grips the tow ball via the four friction pads inside the coupling mechanism. The friction pads generate a stabilising force, reducing snaking and pitching of the trailer." The website states: "When using the AL-KO AKS3004 Stabiliser, it is important to fit a tow ball (Fig.7) with sufficient clearance of at least 60mm between the centre of the ball and the base of the neck and 68mm from the centre of the tow ball to the nearest obstruction on the towing vehicle e.g. bumper, to ensure correct operation. This will allow the stabiliser to perform a 25° axial rotation movement." The website gives you a good description and pictures. www.witter-towbars.co.uk/.../towing_vehicle_safety.aspx Your text warns of the incompatbility of such device because of the available heights described (350 mm and 500 mm) are not sufficient. There is another type of friction sway control device, the Hayman Reese Friction Sway Control, but being a totally different idea, -not connected to the tow ball, I don't think this would apply. For your information, here is a website referring to it: http://www.speedyexhaust.com.au/towbar_accessories.html#26 |
