I would keep it written out in words, i.e.:

...on the fifteenth day of April, nineteen hundred and eighty-five

It is very formal, but often used in legal documents, as below:

"At a stated term of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, held at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse, 500 Pearl Street, in the City of New York, on the fifteenth day of April, two thousand and eight."
