Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / наука, высшая школа
Russian term or phrase:

Эта научная группа (a team of like-minded colleagues, in fact) может быть объединена в рамках какой-либо институции (НИИ, университета), а может и нет, если учитель и ученики работают в разных учреждениям. Тем не менее, они продолжают составлять НАУЧНУЮ ШКОЛУ, поскольку работают в одной области и на базе одной теории/методологии.

Как это правильно передать по-английски?

school / scientific school
Explanation:
"school of thought" refers to the ideas, as such.

"scientific school" is used and is understandable, but occurs most frequently (in my experience) as a translation of Russian "научная школа"

"school" is used, alone, in the relevant sense, but usually in the formula "X and his school". Do a search for "of * and his school" to see loads of examples:
Confucius and his school
Pythagoras and his school
Durkheim and his school
Schoenberg and his school

Reply to asker:

If you write "research school", you incur the same problem as you yourself identified with "school of science."

That is likely why many translators, over many years, have simply used "scientific schools" for this expression, which is so common in Russian parlance. Another option is "tendency."

I mean "a scientific tendency" or "a scientific current." But those, too, will readily be understood as "a tendency to be scientific," rather than what you need to express.

Asker: Да, это первое, что приходит в голову, однако дефиниция Википедии отличается от словарных. Вот, например: school of thought n. pl. schools of thought The point of view held by a particular group: "We have many schools of thought in the intelligence services" (Tom Clancy). The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

http://purdue.academia.edu/CarolineMcKenzie/Following

Они пишут, что хххх Following уууу и у него (нее) есть Followers (определенное число). То есть, сам человек разделяет взгляды кого-то, и у него есть последователи. Но это может быть скорее общностью интересов, нежели научным направлением. Можно скомбинировать:
followers of scientific field X or Y

В любом случае Вам придется прибегнуть к описательному методу, чтобы читатель понял, о чем речь.

school of thought, approach, scholars of...

Explanation:

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Rachel, your comment sounds very relevant. What do you think that if we do not know the NAME of a professor/founder etc. could we use a structure like "research school/s" with the meaning in question?
