not for grading Explanation: |

school of thought, approach, scholars of... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2009-11-13 10:33:55 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Followers" - тоже хорошо. Видите, дорогой Zahar, отличная возможность не повторяться. : ) |

school / scientific school Explanation: "school of thought" refers to the ideas, as such. "scientific school" is used and is understandable, but occurs most frequently (in my experience) as a translation of Russian "научная школа" "school" is used, alone, in the relevant sense, but usually in the formula "X and his school". Do a search for "of * and his school" to see loads of examples: Confucius and his school Pythagoras and his school Durkheim and his school Schoenberg and his school -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2009-11-13 13:00:38 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Reply to asker: If you write "research school", you incur the same problem as you yourself identified with "school of science." That is likely why many translators, over many years, have simply used "scientific schools" for this expression, which is so common in Russian parlance. Another option is "tendency." -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2009-11-13 13:03:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I mean "a scientific tendency" or "a scientific current." But those, too, will readily be understood as "a tendency to be scientific," rather than what you need to express. |
