French term or phrase: compensation
Good evening,

Here is a term referring to marks, as you call it over there, in context:

"Les Modalités de compensation."
"Les règles de la compensation s’appliquent."
"A l’intérieur de l’unité d’enseignement il y a compensation totale entre les éléments constitutifs (affectés éventuellement de leurs coefficients) sans note éliminatoire."

I am not sure what they are referring to .
[is it adjustment or compensation?]
Thanks in advance.

adjustment
Explanation:
I wouldn't think compensation if referring to marks given by an academic institution.

"Terms of Adjustment"
"The rules of adjustment are applied"
"Within the teaching unit, there is complete adjustment between the constitutive elements (possibly affected by their ratios) without any failing mark"

"ratios" should be amended to "factors" - "possibly affected by their factors)

KEY TERM: "Adjustment of marks"

Any *adjustment of marks* considered to be necessary are agreed by the Board in consultation with the External Examiners, who see a run of marks across the modules and are thus able to compare student performance.

Explanation:
I found this website: http://www.etu.paris-sorbonne.fr/spip.php?article195

where this term's explanation is stated as:

Compensation La compensation fonctionne à 2 niveaux, sans note éliminatoire :
- à l’intérieur de l’Unité d’Enseignement (UE), entre les éléments constitutifs (EC)
- entre toutes les UE d’un semestre
Il n’existe pas de compensation entre les éléments constitutifs appartenant à des UE distinctes.

Perhaps this will help you?

neutral  Chris Hall: Exchange doesn't seem a suitable answer IMO. However, adjustments (very similar to what I said) and coordination are two possibilities though.

compensation

Explanation:
Here, all marks for the module are averaged so a mark that would normally be a fail can be compensated by an above average pass mark.

See p.5 of second ref for ample explanation.

Oops - the first link doesn't seem to work. Google "compensation, comment ça marche".

You could use the same term as in the ref and call it an "averaging scheme" or "system" - although they do use the term "compensation" too.
