since cloning is prohibited Explanation: First and only modular hinges in the world?? I think the joke is that barring prohibited cloning (by competitors), this is is the ONE AND ONLY TYPE OF MODULAR HINGES IN THE WORLD. IOW, all similar products are just (unlawful) clones of this model. |

imitation is the greatest form of flattery Explanation: I think Sangro could be on the right tracks - that there may indeed be hundreds of hinges on the market which are very similar to this one - but this is the original and best of its kind? Could it be read as a (not very humourous) tongue-in-cheek put-down of the other brands while not going as far as actually accusing them of breach of copyright? -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-09-10 15:27:20 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I don't even think you need the reference to "cloning" - which, by the way I don't think is a word which is actually used in this context. I would go for a slight departure from the original and say "The first and only range of adjustable hinges in the world (of course, imitation is the greatest form of flattery ...) |

don't even think about copying it! Explanation: Depending upon how informal you can be, I think that this is the sort of equivalent jokey remark that could be made in English. It is actually arch, rather than ironic. |
