Medical - Psychology / Asperger Syndrome
English term or phrase: Priming
Priming. (As subtitle) Quote. "Persons with Asperger Syndrome have difficulty with change in daily activities or schedules, unexpected events, and participating in new activities or environments that are unknown. When unexpected changes in routine occur, persons with Asperger Syndrome may feel stressed or anxious and sometimes even react with tantrums or meltdowns. Providing predictability and information on what to expect is an important part of supporting the student with Asperger Syndrome. Unquote

Further in the text reads: "Priming prepares the student for what is to come".

And: Priming can occur at any time of the day as long as the student is given time and opportunity to process the information but not enough time to forget it. Priming should be done with the student by a calm, patient adult – although providing lists and details of activities in writing has been effective for older students. It should be individualized to best meet the needs of the student considering how much information to provide at a time and at what time of the day depends on the individual student.
