This is a text which explains the background of an engineer. It says that he did a "reservoir design" (diseño de una represa) for a Water Treatment Plant. This is the source sentence:

The pre-stressed concrete reservoirs are an integral part of the city’s water delivery system.

I would like to know what "pre-stressed" means in this context (referring to a reservoir).
