Medical - Medical (general)
Italian term or phrase: pronto soccorso
Ciao,

Yes, I know that 'pronto soccorso' is usually translated as 'first aid'. But I'm looking for something different here, if possible.

I'm translating a medical report from a 'Dipartimento di Emergenza e Urgenza - Pronto Soccorso'.

I'm looking for a specific way of naming this Pronto Soccorso department in English. This center describes their 'Pronto Soccorso' as follows:

"Le funzioni del Pronto Soccorso del presidio ospedaliero di [xxx] sono quelle di garantire che ogni cittadino, in condizioni di emergenza ed urgenza, abbia assicurato il ripristino e la stabilizzazione delle funzioni vitali, un orientamento diagnostico, le cure adeguate, l'eventuale ricovero nel reparto idoneo, ed il trasporto protetto in altre U.O. interne ed esterne, ove fosse necessario."

My problem is that I can't call it a 'First Aid Department' in English. It doesn't sound right, the expression is used very infrequently in English (American, and I think British, hospitals don't have 'first aid departments'), and where I find it in a Google search, it is usually in a translation from another language into English, about a 'first aid department' in some European location (or Quebec, or Lebanon).

(I worked for years in the Emergency Department at UCLA hospital in Los Angeles. We didn't have a 'first aid department'.)

So, can anyone think of another way of saying this in English?

Thanks for your suggestions (and for reading all this!).

If you take a look at the Wikipedia entry for 'Emergency Department", you will be able to consult a section on nomenclature that goes into the merits of what the department is called in different countries and in different contexts (inside the hospital or on road signs). Follow the link:

Asker: Alan, thank you for that link. It's an interesting and very useful discussion of the way emergency departments are referred to in different parts of the English-speaking world, and it helps me as well - although my main concern here is the 'pronto soccorso' attachment at the end of the headindg.

If not urgent care, then may be "urgent attention"? Not likely, though.

agree  Joanna M Cas (X): don't add anything - it's A&E - or Accident and Emergency - which would look better as a heading and takes care of the whole thing.

The Emergency Room Section [of XYZ Hospital]

Explanation:
Boh ... if it is a "dipartimento" di Pronto Soccorso significherà che l'ospedale è diviso in vari settori a seconda delle mansioni e responsabilità rispettive. Quindi "dipartimento" inteso nel senso di "settore", e non nel senso di dipartimento accademico.

Oppure: [XYZ Hospital's] Emergency Room Responsibilities

--------------------------------------------------

"Pronto Soccorso" = "Emergency Room" (at least in USA). Il problema nasce, da come lo vedo io, perché in USA non c'è un "dipartimento" di PS, per questo ho cercato una parafrasi (col contesto offerto all'inizio dell'OP).

"Vai al pronto soccorso" equivale "go to the EM". Quella è l'equivalenza, secondo me.

emergency care (in the Emergency Room - ER) / first aid - emergency care

Explanation:
Emergency medicine
Emergency medicine is a branch of medicine that is practiced in a hospital emergency department, in the field by emergency medical service, such as paramedics, and other locations where initial medical treatment of illness takes place. Just as clinicians operate by immediacy rules under large emergency systems, emergency physicians and other allied health care workers in the emergency department base their practice on a triage system.

Emergency Room ( ER)

Explanation:
Remember the famous ER television series?

ER is standard in US, isn't it?

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 11 hrs (2009-06-28 14:52:56 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't even spell it out, just leave it as "ER". It will be more than understood (unless it is for a European audience in English)

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 11 hrs (2009-06-28 14:55:43 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

Btw, "first aid" is never meant as comprehensive emergency service. It is just things than anyone, even non-medical personnel, can provide--bandaging, desinfection, etc.

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 16 hrs (2009-06-28 20:17:11 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

Yes, but emergency "room" does not mean that there is only 1 room. It's the whole department. Look at the following: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1P2-8620326.html
Since you have a bit of a repetition in your original ( Dipartimento di E. and pronto soccorso) you can easily incorporate everything into: "Department of Emergency Medicine - ER". It is, however, primarily a US variant. Wouldn't know how to localize to UK :)

Asker: "ER" is standard in the US, yes, although I think a lot of people prefer (and insist on) 'Emergency Department' because it's a lot more than ONE room. Also agree with your comment about 'first aid', which is another reason I can't use 'First Aid Department' in my translation. (My translation is supposed to use UK terminology, by the way.) Thanks.

Asker: Hvala lepa!

rapid response, assessment and referral / rapid assessment and referral

Explanation:
- if you want to add the "pronto soccorso" bit, as it seems to be what it covers
"Emergency Department [or A&E, or whatever] - rapid response, assessment and referral"

or maybe: urgent assessment/emergency assessment and referral, depending what you call the 'Dipartimento di Emergenza e Urgenza' before it

THE RAPID RESPONSE ASSESSMENT TEAM
HISTORY
The team was originally formed in December 1997 as a trust initiative to reduce the number of older people being admitted into acute hospital beds inappropriately. Initially it was only the Acute Medical Assessment Area (AMAA) who could access the team but the service has now expanded to the point that it covers Accident and Emergency (A&E), AMAA, Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) and it also has access to 6 in-patient beds on ward 29.
