bedding load Explanation: * beam to base contact -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-06-09 19:57:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Could be a pad of some material inbetween beam and support: bedplate/soleplate. |

forces about a given point Explanation: It appears to be a mix of the two languages, but given they talk about compression etc. this is a possibility. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-06-09 20:10:11 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Please see Kashew's answer. |

end(-block) forces Explanation: The constant reference to steel beams is troubling given that much of this document seems to be about concrete ... In prestressed (or post-tensioned) beams, etc., about is the name given to the "end block", that part of the member with complex forces at play, due both to the fact that anchoring of prestress tendons at the end is all-important, and the stresses particularly high, such that the concrete might burst apart, AND to the fact that the end of the beam etc. is generally where its load rests on supports. I'm not aware that about is generally used for steel members, but then I don't do a lot of work with steel, so it's entirely possible that it IS the term for the "end" of steel beams. I don't think "end block" would be applicable here because the forces at play are less complex (I think) given that steel is a single material, unlike concrete beams which contain passive and active reinforcing steel. Strictly speaking, also, efforts is "forces AND moments", but there's probably no need to be so specific and complicate matters unnecessarily. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 16 hrs (2009-06-10 10:37:19 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Appears about is said of the end of all beam-type elements, irrespective of material or materials. L'about est un terme de charpenterie désignant l'extrémité façonnée d'une pièce de bois. http://www.mordane.com/about_(charpente).php |
