Christina;

I don't know it could have been about the research I did that made you think this suggestion "might be a variant for South African English. In any event, I can understand why you choose "animal husbandry." I hasten to add, however, that "animal husbandry" (which I used to believe was adequate translation for this concept) is not an appropriate translation. This is due to the fact that animal husbandry, more often than not, refers only to breeding and raising animals, whereas zootechnology/zootechnics involves a bit more (than the mere breeding and raising of animals).

Hi Crisitina! I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Since all the sites I've included in my notes belong to US universities, I wonder which reference is South African. As for the writers and whether they master the language, I can't say; indeed, I haven't visited all the sites and read their content, but I would imagine that all of their content is written by specialists in the field who may have chosen the term for a good reason: ít conveys a slightly more nuanced meaning than "animal husbandry" (whose meaning is often limited, in dictionaries, to the breeding and raising of animals).

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Marcelo for the extensive research. It seems that your translation might be a variant for South African English.

Asker: Hi Marcelo! Thanks for your feedback :) I read most of your references before grading, and most of them were written by people who did not master the English language (please note - not saying native/non-native). Nevertheless, the South African reference is reliable (IMO). I posted this term because I could not find Zootechnology in any monolingual dictionary (only Zoology). On the other hand, despite a high rate for a term on the Internet, I do not take it for granted. IMO dictionaries are the basis of our languages - and the term described therein is what should be considered the correct/best option, unless it is a word coined by scientists to describe a new process... And then, the latter should only be traslated, if it is published in the target language in scientific articles. One last comment - after I graded Antonio's answer, I realized that the topic title was my answer!!! Thanks a bunch, Marcelo!

Asker: 1. This is the South African Reference: The use of genetic relationships among cattle breeds in the Dept. of Zootechnology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria,. Onderstepoort, Republic of South Africa. 2. UCDavis Newsletter lists two faculty members from Mexican Universities with diplomas in veterinary medicine & zootechnology.
