French term or phrase: rentier
Un rentier est un individu qui vit de ses rentes.

Phénomène assez important en Occident au cours du XIXe siècle, le phénomène a quasiment disparu avec les vagues d’inflation liées aux guerres mondiales et à la Grande Dépression, et à l’augmentation des impôts, en particulier sur le revenu.

person with a private income

Explanation:
As your source indeed indicates, the French "rentier" goes back quite a while. At that time, discretion being the better part of valour, money, politics, sex, were talked about less freely and much of the vocabulary surrounding social life at the time of course reflects that. In fact, in English, there is no one worder for the French "rentier". It is common to use a short descriptive phrase : a person with (a) private income.

It is best to avoid "pensioner" as that has the immediate contemporary image and meaning of a person who is over a given age and receiving money from a pension fund, state pension, whatever. You can be a "rentier" at the tender age of 20, but probably not quite be eligible for a state pension !

"Rentier" (Petit Robert 2009) : avoir des revenus suffisants pour vivre sans travailler

When I say there is no one-worder, the word "annuitant" is not used in ordinary everyday English. Your context may enable you to employ this term.
