Newspaper article about a series of helicopter crashes:

neutral  chris collister: The spin referred to is due to the torque reaction on the blades. If there is no tail rotor, the result is uncontrollable rapid rotation. "whirl" is a dynamic instability specific to rotating shafts

-> what about spinning like a top, to keep the image?

neutral  Bashiqa: A top actually spins in a controlled manner. When a helicopter loses its tail rotor it turns on itself initially before losing control and crashing in a tumbling motion.
