Spanish term or phrase: Aglutinante
This is a description of a public building and its use over the last 100 years. It will be on a panel outside the building as part of an architectural tour of the town. I'm looking for something colloquial, not stuffy, sounding.

The cement (that)

Explanation:
has held it all together
Though I would hesitate to put it on a panel cf. glue.
Not even sure if inverted commas would help.
It would be OK for mother tongue English speakers but other visitors might not get the point

Something with "binding" ?

Keeping together

Explanation:
Using the meaning of "aglutinar" (aunar, unir) I suggest "Keeping together the city's cultural life for over 100 years".

glue

Explanation:
That's what first came to mind and it shares the root. The glue of the city's cultural life for more than 100 years.

Building on a decade of design debate | Archive | Architects Journal'Architecture, 'Musgrave insists, 'is the glue of public life. And you don't have to accommodate 2000 people on a Friday night to be a pacey institution. ...

Otherwise I would go for something simple like focus or focal point - even just heart or centre.

I've been reflecting on this, and I don't think glue would be any "weirder" on a panel than aglutinante would be in Spanish. I'm sticking with it, if you'll excuse the dreadful pun.
