Italian term or phrase: fiale

This little word appears in a description of a clinical drug study, where the methods of administration of the drug (MuscoRil) are described: "...160 pazienti trattati inizialmente con fiale e secondariamente con capsule per un periodo di 3/5 giorni ..."

When I look up 'fiala' in ProZ and my dictionaries I find 'vial, phial, ampoule' ... but this is the container. And the DeMauro online Italian dictionary says "...piccolo recipiente spec. di vetro ... contenente profumi, medicine ..."

So can I translate 'trattati con fiale' as 'treated by injection'? It's the only translation that makes sense to me ... does it mean anything else?

I know the kudoz is closed and that it could be off topic, surely Muscoril is not available in oral solution, but any vial of drug for injection can be administered orally, putting the solution under tongue and letting it dissolve there :)

SJLD	on the contrary 14:53 May 17, 2009 it is quite clear that if this medication (thiocolchicoside) comes in a "fiale", it is the injectable form. FYI oral polio vaccine comes in vials not phials - see also vaccine vial monitor. Or is that phaccine phial monitor? :-)

I think this could be either taken orally or by injection, but unfortunately your text doesn't make it clear which one.

Yes, in this context, it has to be treatment by (or with) injections.

SJLD	Muscoril dosage forms 10:54 May 17, 2009 are topical gel, caps and injectable solution. The only one likely to come in an ampoule is the injectable.

Just found this while researching how this medication is administered:
" Each ampoule contains 4 mg thiocolchicoside, 16.8 mg sodium chloride and q.s. 2 mL water for injection." (And it's also available as a tablet.)

I see no reason to be confused. A phial is a perfectly normal means of administering medicine. In this case the medicine is to be administered initially using phials, and then proceeding to capsules.

Explanation:
The confusion is simply enormous.
"ampoule" is actually a sealed glass or plastic bulb containing solutions for hypodermic injection.
In your text it's not clear whether the drug is via injection or simply a different kind of drug from the capsules used in the other way of treating the patient.
I think that "phials/vials" might be all right both in the case of injection and in the case of simply a different kind of drug, instead of capsules.

A phial/vial might simply contain a "liquid" form of drug (and non necessarily to be given by injection) , instead of the solid form contained in the capsule.
