head of subject Explanation: Given the details of the duties involved in this position, 'head of subject' seems to be the best translation. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 mins (2009-04-07 19:24:24 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- HEAD OF SUBJECT - Job Description - PLEASE NOTE The job as described here looks impossibly huge and demanding, especially in view of the teaching commitments of Heads of Subject, the administrative demands on their time, and their innumerable daily conversations with members of the College, boys as well as colleagues. So you are encouraged to regard this ‘job description’ - which will in detail vary anyway from department to department - more as a guide to good practice than as a daunting sentence. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything well all of the time, and no-one expects perfection. But if departments are functioning well, colleagues will find their work satisfying, the boys will benefit academically and intellectually, and the College will thrive. And departments will only function well if they are well led. Introduction In essence, the function of a Head of Subject is: (a) to set an example to colleagues in the department, to get the best out of them, and to encourage them to work effectively and pleasurably together as a team; (b) to interest the boys in the subject and ensure that they are challenged academically; (c) to show enthusiasm for the subject and convince others of its lasting value; (d) to provide a stimulating learning environment and maintain it in good condition; (e) to represent the subject generally; and specifically when pupils are making subject choices; (f) to ensure that the administrative business of the department is carried out effectively. Details may be found in the Subject Handbook. Among such duties in all subject areas are the systematised retention of Coursework and Mock exam scripts. It is accepted that some administrative duties may be delegated within a department. (1) QUALITY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING Teaching Ensure that the highest possible standards of teaching are achieved within the department. The Head of Subject’s role is central to the academic success of the College, and it includes: - ensuring that colleagues are up to-date and on top of their subject; - promoting departmental discussion of teaching methods, so that lessons may be (as far as possible) interesting; intelligible; organised, and effective; - systematic monitoring of teaching standards (e.g. by lesson observation); - encouraging lesson observation of/by other colleagues within the department; -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 16 mins (2009-04-07 19:25:09 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- http://www.dulwich.org.uk/client_files/doc_docs/JobDescripti... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 17 mins (2009-04-07 19:26:28 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- http://www.tes.co.uk/JobDetailsbronze.aspx?ac=2746867&qry=pa... |

Department coordinator Explanation: Here is how the French unemployment office describes the job. In their definition, it chiefly concerns adult training and further education. And, as there can also be a chef de départment/centre and/or directeur pédagogique, IMO the position is (often) oriented towards course planning/ teacher training/educational methods, etc, rather than management. Other possible translations, depending on the context, level in the hierarchy and exact job definition could be : insitutional coordinator, curriculum coordinator. |

Teaching Coordinator Explanation: Hi, I used to work in a French business school as an English teacher. The term "responsable pédagogique" was used an awful lot. I think the translation "teaching coordinator" could fit here. Example sentence(s):

HoD or Head of Department Explanation: If it designates the person running a teaching department then this is the standard UK term I believe. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2009-04-07 21:56:48 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Further to Lingua 5B's valid query, I should add that my interpretation was based on a secondary school environment and that in other contexts alternatives would be better. |
