English term or phrase: Alternative strata
Is it OK to use “alternative strata” like below:

To quarry the fill material for the dam body, the slightly weathered part of the sandstone and sandstone slate alternative strata available in the immediate vicinity of the project area is exceptionally well suited for use in dam construction.

Thank you.

The sandstone would be accessed on its compaction abilities, and samples of the sandstone from an alternative strata, which is in the same area, has been deemed to be suitable.
You couldn't use "dam wall construction" as this may not be what it is good for, they could be just saying it is good for fill, it could be good for porosity, (clay content) if it had "dam wall construction' you would change "use in" to "use with"

alternative strata
sequential/alternating strata

Explanation:
A suggestion, as i think what you probably mean is 'alternating' not 'alternative'.

I would also change the sentence order slightly, so that it read something like

To quarry the fill material for the dam body, the slightly weathered part of the sequential strata of sandstone and sandstone slate available.....

neutral  B D Finch: Alternating suggests movement or fluctuation, as in an alternating current, while sequential would be for more than two types of stratum.

-> I have to disagree with first point-Alternating does not suggest movement here & is used at least as often as 'alternate'(there are also alternate current machines, which move to induce alternating current). Sequential may imply more than 2 layers though.
