Although your answer came in a little too late, but this is what I expected. I agree it has nothing to do with the legal usage. I consulted a native speaker and he said my translation "美国人不喜欢别人对他的家人品头论足" is close to what the author meant. but I don't agree to add the latter half of your sentence: 美国人认为他们的家人独立于工作之外 because it is not in the original text.
